I discovered Koh Lanta through an online search. When I read about it, I thought it's too beautiful to miss it. It sounded like a long trip, yet I wanted to give it a try. I am usually not keen on going to the popular islands, I like to find the non-touristy places. More quiet, relaxing, and a place to unwind.

Reaching here: It takes almost a day to reach this place. From the airport, you can book a minibus which have specific timings. The bus does not run too late as during the journey there is a short sea transit. It is best to arrive in Krabi early in the day so you are well in time to reach your hotel. There are lots of hotel options here, they are either near the national parks or near the town. Depending on the activities you plan to do you should choose the place to stay. Its not to crowded around here. Most places are far so you need a tuktuk or a taxi. Alternately, you can hire a bike.

What you can do around here:

  1. The hiking trail at the Mu Ko Lanta park is one of the best trails. As you get higher up on the winding trail, you can see the beach and light house from afar. The trail is an easy one with some rough areas, worth every minute. There are lots of monkeys on the way, be prepared to face them.

  2. The walk into the mangrove forest is also interesting. Better not be alone as the monkeys here are too many to deal. Its pretty dense inside.

  3. The islands trip for the entire day covers three smaller islands where you can swim and dive. Ko Lanta is a popular destination for diving. Some part of it almost reminded me of Ha Long Bay. The water is clear and beautiful so you can see underwater almost like looking into the mirror.

  4. The beaches all around the island are really pretty. I walked to many of them close to the hotel area. Street food is very popular especially seafood which is freshly prepared and barbecued.

  5. The market is wonderful walk, along the sea. Lot of restaurants, interesting shopping items, and lot of color.

The cooking class here is quite popular run by local women. It's a good experience even if you are not so much into cooking but interested in learning about the local cuisine. The place is an old house and a restaurant surrounded by lot of trees. The host is very well organized and helps you. You then enjoy your own cooked food. They arrange the pick up and drop to the location.

On my way back, I was able to explore the cafes in Krabi in the market area. Some do close early on weekends so check the timings. The spot to the light house and the walking trail were my favorite activities. The view of the water and sky still reminds of the day.

Hope you will enjoy your island experience like I did.
